We would like to tell you about the latest environmental and community project launched by Kriek Helicopters.   We realized that the environment is under threat by co2 emissions and decided to do something to eliminate the problem while providing in other needs.

During the current economic climate, many of us have forgotten about the environmental challenges we face.  However, global warming is still a problem to be reckoned with.

The aviation industry contributes an estimated 1% of the global greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere.  This is usually considered to have a lower impact on the environment since most greenhouse gasses are emitted at a higher layer in the atmosphere, the troposphere.  Helicopters operate at a much lower altitude and emit Co2 in the lower parts of the atmosphere just above surface level.

Kriek Helicopters decided to combat its Co2 emissions by the proper planning of flights and using economical routes.  This has also been the case in the past, not always for the environment, but to reduce costs to our clients.  The easiest way to reduce C02 emissions is by using less fuel, even motor vehicle drivers can contribute by planning their trips.  By improving driving habits, one will not only benefit the environment, but will save money too.

The problem was that with a successful helicopter operator like Kriek Helicopters, fuel is necessary to drive the growing business.  The team at Kriek Helicopters did some research and heard about Food & Trees for Africa, South Africa’s greening, climate change action and food gardening social enterprise, and approached them with a new idea.

Using the FTFA carbon calculator Kriek Helicopters calculated the impact of their use of fuel, paper and electricity etc.  The team, Dr. Johan Kriek, CEO of Kriek Helicopters, - and his son, Johann Kriek, Chief pilot, decided to purchase fruit trees to  voluntarily offset their carbon emissions to both solve the Co2 problem and provide food to the community.

We are proud to announce that we can plough something positive back into the environment and the community.  The trees have been donated to tree planting projects in the Kimberley, Bloemfontein and Upington areas to launch the project.  The intention of Kriek Helicopters is to create awareness about the environment in central South Africa and the rest of the country.

Kriek Helicopters owns and operates the Heli Alliance system – www.kriekheli.com, which is an advanced helicopter operator network in Southern Africa, Namibia and Botswana.  By utilizing the Heli Alliance, Kriek Helicopters hopes to create a positive movement towards environmental awareness in Southern African and possibly the rest of Africa.   We call on all businesses to take responsibility for a cleaner earth.  We hope that one day, the only environmental footprint of aviation; will be a brief shadow over the African landscape.  For anyone looking for further information, please visit www.kriekheli.com .
