.......Building material being offloaded .......Construction of two quarantine stations
During Operation Malawi 1991, the quarantine stations played a major role in the operation as there would be no clearance from the veterinary department of South Africa if the animals were not quarantined.
Two quarantine stations were constructed, one at Lilongwe for animals captured in Liwonde National Park and one at Mzuzu for animals captured at Njika National Park. Everything had to be constructed from scratch, from bush kitchens to showers and toilets. The quarantine stations were used as a base from which to operate and fuel, vehicles, equipment and other supplies had to be stored on-site.

During the construction of the quarantine station, representatives of the South African Veterinary department inspected the facilities to make sure they were up to standard. The conservation department of Malawi granted permission to construct the facilities on their land. The facilities were later donated to the Malawi government for their use.

The quarantine facilities were completed after a few months and the crew arrived. The crew included veterinarians, a helicopter pilot, diesel mechanic and volunteers. The operation was now about to start, but was almost compromised by the serious helicopter clearance incident (Chapter 1). The next phase was the boma capture of Sable antelope at Liwonde in the South of Malawi with the Bell Jet ranger 206 helicopter.
